Jean Desprez (Designer)
Perfumer Jean Desprez was the great-grandson of perfumer Félix Millot, and he carried on the family tradition with pride. He created the iconic fragrance Crêpe De Chine for the Millot brand in 1925, and he went on to establish his own luxury perfume house in Paris in 1928. Desprez launched another classic fragrance, the elegant oriental Bal à Versailles, in 1962. Bal à Versailles’ wearers have included icons like Elizabeth Taylor, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and Joan Collins.
Other fragrances released by Jean Desprez included Votre Main, Jardanel, Sheherazade, and Versailles pour Homme. Desprez collaborated with other top creators: he hired Paul Mergier to design the brand’s packaging and Leon Leyritz to design the perfume bottles. After his death, the business was taken over by his daughter Marie and his son Denis.
In 1963 Desprez’s company was sold to Revillon. Since then, the license for Jean Desprez fragrances changed ownership several times. It was purchased by Inter Parfums, then by Parlux Fragrances, then by the Florida-based Genesis International Marketing Corporation.
