Judith Leiber (Designer)
Judith Leiber's elegant and artfully designed purses are frequently seen on the red carpet in Hollywood and in museums such as the Los Angeles County Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. Born in Budapest in 1921, she was saved from the Holocaust by her father with a type of protective passport called a Schutzpass, which can be viewed in Washington, D.C., at the Holocaust Museum.
She began her career by creating handbags in her home and later worked in a friend's factory. Immigrating to the United States in 1948, she worked for various design houses. Even the president's wife, Mamie Eisenhower, was carrying a Leiber creation at her husband's inauguration in 1953. The Leiber Company opened in 1963, and the designer offered her own line of sophisticated evening bags, handbags and accessories.
Her leather handbags embellished with rhinestones have remained popular for over 40 years and are carried by royalty and celebrities alike. Judith Leiber has four boutiques across the country, in New York City, Las Vegas, Atlanta and Costa Mesa. Her book, The Artful Handbag, can be purchased in her boutiques and contains a detailed history of the company.
There are five perfumes in the Judith Leiber fragrance base, and the flacons of crystal and glass that contain them are as elegant as the fragrances themselves. The first one, Leiber for women, was launched in 2007.
