Max Azria was born on the first day of 1949 in Sfax, Tunisia, and was raised in France. Azria designed for a women's apparel line in Paris for 11 years before moving to Los Angeles, Calif., and launching a chain of women's apparel boutiques by the name of Jess in 1981.
In 1989, Azria began work on his signature line, BCBGMAXAZRIA, which was first presented at New York Fashion Week in 1996. His collection earned him induction into the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 1998.
In 2004, Azria launched a celebrity couture gown line called Max Azria Atelier, and in 2006, debuted a distinct ready-to-wear collection entitled Max Azria. By this time, celebrities such as Halle Berry, Alicia Keys, Sharon Stone and Angelina Jolie were all fans, and after acquiring the Herve' Leger fashion house, more celebrities such as Beyonce Knowles, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Kate Winslet donned his talents on the red carpet.
There are over 500 BCBGMAXAZRIA boutiques around the world, along with placements in high-end stores such as Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord & Taylor. The brand is noted for its high fashion collections with affordable prices, including when Azria teamed up with Miley Cyrus in 2009 for a line at Walmart.
Azria introduced his fragrance line in 2001 with the women's fragrances BCBGirls Sexy, BCBGirls Nature and BCBGirls Metro. The brand produces scents with perfumer collaborators Sarah Horowitz and Stephen Nilsen.
