Phat Farm made its first foray into the fragrance business with 2001’s Phat Farm Premium, a subtle, masculine fragrance with floral notes. Premium was the first product from a licensing deal that was concluded with Stern Fragrances in 2000 to create a fragrance line for the brand. A limited clothing collection, also called Premium, was launched in time to celebrate Phat Farm’s 10th anniversary.

Phat Farm was founded in 1992 as a lifestyle brand by impresario and entrepreneur Russell Simmons. From its founding, the brand has focused on stylish hip-hop fashion for young men. In 1993, Simmons saw his empire expand with the founding of Baby Phat, a women’s fashion line.

Simmons began to shift his business strategy in 1998 by licensing Phat Farm and Baby Phat apparel to external partners, such as Aris Industries and Turbo Sportswear. He later sold Phat Farm and Baby Phat in 2004 for $114 million.

In 2006, Phat Farm expanded its fragrance line with Phat Farm Atman, a fragrance for men designed by Jean Claude Delville. Atman, with base notes of sandalwood and musk and top notes of fresh aquatic and bergamot, went on to become the hip-hop brand’s signature fragrance. That year, the company released its first aftershave balm, also named Atman.

The brand's products are stocked by Sears and specialty stores, such as K&G Stores and Ross Stores. As of 2016, Phat Farm remains focused on its core market, offering apparel and accessories to a young, sophisticated, urban audience.
