Romeo Gigli Fragrances

Born in Faenza, Italy, in 1949, Romeo Gigli's affluent, aristocratic upbringing instilled a deep passion for luxury and personal expression through artistic creation. In college, he studied architecture and traveled extensively throughout European capital cities. The distinct juxtaposition of the buildings he witnessed during his travels inspired his first, avant-garde ""street style"" collections.

In 1978, Gigli traveled to New York to design his first line of menswear for designer Pietro Dimitri. After returning to Italy, he worked as a design consultant for several fashion houses before founding his own design house in 1983.

Gigli is best known for his characteristic design style that intermingles Japanese street punk and Japanese severity with Renaissance nobility. He melds this highly eclectic mix of design styles with his signature ornate drapery and beading techniques, using opulent fabrics such as silk, brocade and velvet.

It is important to note that Gigli was one of the first fashion designers to include other designers' pieces in his retail stores. He is also a pioneer in using stretch materials, rounded hiplines and accentuated waistlines to enhance the curves of the women who wear his designs.

Gigli debuted two women's fragrances, Romeo de Romeo Gigli and Romeo Eau Fraiche, in 1989. He later released six additional men's and women's scents to his line before retiring from his signature label in 2004. As of 2014, the Gigli name is owned by Italian manufacturer IT Holding.
